House dust mite – Cleaning

House dust mite minimisation

The house dust mite lives in human habitation and feeds on flakes of human or pet skin.

The average life cycle of a male dust mite is 10-29 days, a female dust mite can live up to 70 days. They will produce 60-100 eggs, so a population grows pretty fast. In the lifetime dust mite will produce roughly 2000 faecal particles and even larger number of dust particles.

Perfect habitat for dust mites will be in carpets, mattresses, soft furniture, bedding /pillows that have enough moisture produced by human body.

No matter how clean your home is, dust mites cannot be 100% eliminated, but carpet cleaning will make it possible to dramatically reduce their numbers.

House Dust Mites can trigger respiratory or dermatological conditions including asthma and eczema. Dust mite allergies are immune responses to microscopic bugs. You may experience:

  • Coughing
  • Breathlessness
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy eyes
  • Wheezing
  • Itchy skin

What can we do at home to minimise number of dust mites:

Use a dehumidifier or aircon to reduce humidity in the air
Wash beddings at list once a week in hot water
Consider replacing wool and feathered bedding with synthetic materials
Use vacuum cleaner with special filters weekly or preferably rent carpet cleaner machines and mop the floor.
Steam clean carpets, rugs and upholstery at least once per 6 months especially if you suffer from allergies and have pets living in your house.
